Facelift vs Neck Lift in Charlotte NC

Although facelift and neck lift can both reduce visible signs of aging and restore a more refreshed and youthful facial appearance, each targets a particular area. To help you understand what each procedure entails, read on as Dr. Robert Graper and Dr. Garrett Harper of Graper Cosmetic Surgery discuss the differences between facelift and neck lift.

What Comprises a Facelift?

Facelift targets the lower two-thirds of the face, including the cheeks, chin and jawline, as well as the neck. The procedure lifts the cheeks and jowls, refines the jawline and removes excess fat and skin from the chin and the neck.

The surgical incisions are made in the hair above and behind the ears and in the crease in front of the ears. During surgery, the deep facial tissues are lifted and tightened, displaced fat is repositioned, excess skin is trimmed and the remaining skin is re-draped.

What Comprises a Neck Lift?

Neck lift treats loose skin, muscle and fat under the chin, along the jawline and on the neck. It can slim a double chin, remove saggy skin from the neck and define the jawline. Unlike facelift, neck lift does not address the cheeks.

During neck lift, incisions are created behind the ears (and possibly under the chin). Redundant hanging skin is trimmed, the muscles are tightened and excess fat and skin are removed.

Is Facelift or Neck Lift a Better Option?

Neither procedure is better than the other. The procedure that is right for you depends on the specific areas that bother you. If you are concerned about the lower two-thirds of your face and neck, facelift is likely more appropriate. If your neck has aged noticeably but your middle and lower face still look youthful, neck lift might be the more suitable option.
