People convey their mood with their eyebrows. If the eyebrows are sagging, the person looks tired or old. If the eyebrows are too low on the nasal side of the brow, the person looks angry. Low brow position on the ear side looks sad. But if the brows are arched above the bony rim the person looks happy. Brow lifts are performed in our office under IV sedation and local anesthesia. Patients are totally asleep, feel no pain and remember nothing, but they are still breathing on their own. Brow lifts can be done via an endoscopic approach or the standard open approach where the incision is made across the scalp. Endoscopic brow lifts use fiber optics through 2 cm. incisions behind the hairline to release the drooping brow from the bony orbital rim. We remove muscles that produce frown lines and suspend the brow up to produce the desired results. The procedure takes about 1 1/2 hours to perform and frequently produces so little bruising that many patients are at work within several days.
Who are good candidates for browlift?
Women and men with sagging brow skin who consequently look tired or sad, have vertical lines between the eyes from frowning and have excess skin from the brow droop in the upper eyelids. Patients must be physically and emotionally healthy, have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery, and understand the risks and benefits of the procedure are ideal candidates for a browlift procedure.
What is the typical recovery time?
Patients are discharged after the surgery with instructions, medication and an appointment for their first follow-up visit. We see patients back the next day following surgery and then again at 5–7 days post-operatively. Most patients return to work at 1–5 days, depending on their job. Strenuous exercise can be resumed at three weeks post-operatively.
What are the risks associated with the procedure?
Complications consist of swelling, bruising, temporary or permanent numbness of the forehead, temporary or permanent brow paralysis and brow asymmetries. All open browlifts will have numbness behind the incision on the scalp for 6–12 months, but then resolve. Some report itching in this area as well. Temporary hair loss near the incision is infrequent and resolves on its own.
The cost of the procedure depends on many variables, so it is not possible to give a price without a personal consultation. Associated costs may include the price of the procedure, operating room costs and anesthesia fees. Please contact us for a personal consultation.
